Mary and I went to Spain for a couple of weeks for a honeymoon. Our original plan was to go to the south (Granada, etc.) but I ran across a road atlas from MOPU (the ministry of public works) in a bookshop in Madrid. For some reason, I looked up "Lastra" in the index and came across a bunch of towns in the north named La Lastra or Lastres. So we changed the plan and drove north first.
The picture on the right is from the Picos de Europa. We stayed in a Parador there. There was a cable car (telerifico) going from the Parador area to this view. It's a very beautiful area.
The nearby La Lastra (in Cantabria) was a disappointment, basically a very poor country town.
I got a very bad flu on the way, and felt terrible in the Picos. We also went to Leon and I recovered in a beautiful Parador there, one that had been a monastery. On the way back down, we stopped in Salamanca.
We then went to the south of Spain and spent about half the vacation there.
